History

  • 1575

First documented mention of the site, where a single-storey building was originally constructed.

  • 1705

Expansion of the building into its present-day floor plan, including the creation of a pleasure garden for lavish celebrations and prestigious events.

  • 1718

The building became the official residence of Count August Christoph von Wackerbarth, Dresden’s fortress governor, field marshal, and chief inspector of Saxony’s architectural affairs.

    • 1
    • 2
  • 1728

The building was destroyed by fire while the King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm I, and his son were visiting and narrowly escaped the flames. In the same year, Count von Wackerbarth commissioned Johann Christoph Knöffel, one of Dresden’s most renowned architects, to rebuild the palace. Knöffel later became Oberlandbaumeister and played a key role in shaping Dresden’s Baroque architecture.

    • 3
  • 1729

Count von Wackerbarth moved into the restored governor’s residence. Around this time, Augustus the Strong founded the Société des antisobres (“Society of Opponents of Sobriety”) and held meetings in a specially designated cellar on the south side of the palace. The residence soon became an important centre of Dresden’s courtly culture and Baroque society.

    • 4
  • 1734

After Count von Wackerbarth’s death, the palace was inherited by his stepson, Count Wackerbarth-Salmour.

  • 1738

In the palace, Count von Rutowski, a son of Augustus the Strong, founded Dresden’s first Masonic lodge, Aux trois aigles blancs (“At the Three White Eagles”).

    • 5
  • 1740

The Chevalier de Saxe, Johann Georg, another son of Augustus the Strong, purchased the palace.

    • 6
  • 1760

Severe damage to the palace during the bombardment of Dresden in the Seven Years’ War.

  • 1763 – 64

Restoration of the palace by Saxon court architect Friedrich August Krubsacius, including minor interior alterations such as the addition of the northwest staircase.

    • 7
  • 1773

Following another change of ownership, the building received its present name. The new owner, Prince Carl of Saxony, briefly served as Duke of Courland before residing in the palace as heir to the Chevalier de Saxe.

    • 8
  • 1774

Further renovations were carried out within the Kurländer Palais, which soon became regarded as one of the most beautiful and elegant palaces in Dresden.

    • 9
  • 1797

After the Duke of Courland’s death, his daughter Maria Christina of Saxony sold the palace to the state for 40,000 thalers.

  • 1798

Elector Frederick Augustus III, who became King of Saxony in 1806, acquired the building.

  • 1813

The Kurländer Palais served as a military hospital, particularly during the Battle of Dresden. Following Napoleon’s final victory on German soil, he visited his wounded soldiers there. The palace was later reconstructed by architect Christian Friedrich Schuricht, who adapted the building for the Surgical-Medical Academy and the affiliated Midwifery Institute.

    • 10
  • 1814 – 64

The Royal Surgical-Medical Academy occupied the building and, among other patients, treated the temporarily blind four-year-old Karl May there in 1845. One of its professors was the painter, naturalist, and physician Carl Gustav Carus, after whom Dresden University Hospital is still named today. In the following years, the building continued to serve medical and scientific purposes.

    • 11
    • 12
  • 1865

The Academy was succeeded by the Provincial Medical Board, which was later replaced by the State Health Office.

    • 13
  • 1900 – 45

The rooms of the Kurländer Palais were used by the Saxon Homeland Protection Association, while the historic cellars housed a wine merchant.

  • 1945

During the air raid on Dresden, the Kurländer Palais was completely destroyed by fire and largely collapsed.

  • after 1945

Only through great effort were the monument conservators of the GDR able to save the fundamentally restorable ruins from demolition.

    • 14
  • till 1975

The originally preserved vaulted cellar was used as a wine storage facility.

  • 1980 – 81

Expansion of the vaulted cellar by the interest group “Jazz im Kulturbund” for cultural events and performances.

    • 15
  • 1981 – 97

The Kurländer Palais was used as the renowned “Jazzclub Tonne,” an important cultural venue in Dresden.

  • 2005

The vaulted cellars were operated by the student club “Bärenzwinger”.

  • since 2006

The Kurländer Palais, including its interiors and outdoor areas, was rebuilt with an investment of between 8 and 12 million euros. Particular attention was paid to monument preservation, with the stabilization of the original Baroque ruins as the highest priority. The reconstruction successfully combined preserved historic elements with modern architecture and was carried out by USD Immobilien.
